Mrs. Helen Bernice Hoof

Helen Bernice Hoof was born on August 1, 1928 in Memphis, TN to her proud parents, Charles Marshall, Sr. and Rosa Lee Marshall who preceded her in death. Helen departed this life on June 15, 2014 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease for many years. Helen was baptized at St. Augustine Catholic Church as an infant. All of her life she was a devoted and faithful member of her beloved St. Augustine Church. She cherished the time she spent attending mass and spending many Saturdays cleaning the church to get it ready for Mass on Sunday. She attended St. Augustine Elementary and High School. While attending St. Augustine High School she met Priestley Hoof. After graduating high school she and Priestley were married on November 25, 1948. To this union six children were born. Priestley preceded Helen in death. Helen spent many years working for the Catholic Diocese. She first worked at Father Bertrand High School. She then went to work at Memphis Catholic High School. During her time as secretary of both schools Helen met and bonded with many parents and students. She especially enjoyed her involvement with the students. She formed many lasting relationships with the faculty and students treasuring them all. She retired after working 37 years in the Catholic School system. Helen enjoyed planting and working in her yard. She also looked forward to visiting relatives in various parts of the country. Helen leaves to cherish her memory three children, Priestley Hoof, Jr., Charlotte Dixon-Burke and Janice Hoof-Rice. Three children, Yvonne Shine, Charles Hoof, Sr. and Robert Hoof preceded her in death. One brother, Robert Marshall (Beryl) and two sisters, Sister Mary Charlotte Marshall and Charlene Marshall. One brother, Charles Marshall, Jr. and one sister Betty Jacobs preceded her in death. Fourteen grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, one grandson, Marcus McClendon preceded her in death. In addition to her immediate family Helen has two very special God-daughters, Hattie Moore and Patryce Steele who she loved dearly. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and many longtime friends that she cherished. We will all cherish fond and loving memories of Helen. She will be deeply missed. Funeral Mass will be held at 11am on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Memphis, TN. A visitation will be Monday, June 23, 2014 at 5pm - 7pm at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Memphis, TN Father Anthony P. Clark will officiate. Helen will be laid to rest at Memphis National Cemetery.
