Mr. Larry Dean Woods

Mr. Larry Dean Woods, 75, of Peoria, Illinois, transitioned to his heavenly home at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, June 2, 2024, surrounded by his family. Larry was born on August 22, 1948 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, to proud parents Northern H. and Retta Mae (Newcomb) Woods. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School, where he excelled in football, track and field. Upon graduation from high school, Larry enlisted in the military and honorably served in the Corps-level support command of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He received many recognitions for his military valor, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Air Medal. Larry was affiliated with many service-related organizations, such as the Peoria local Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 1151, and the Disabled Veterans Association. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason affiliated with the Prince Hall Freemasonry Henry Brown Lodge #22, and a member of the Peter H. Clark Elks Lodge #483 IBPOEW. Larry's professional journey was equally remarkable. He dedicated many years of his life to AT&T, where he served as a Global Service Manager. His affinity for technology was unparalleled, making him a respected figure in his field. For leisure, Larry loved cooking, traveling, nice clothes, and spending time with loved ones. Larry was a faithful member of Bethel United Methodist Church and held many roles in supporting the ministry over the years. Larry married Hortense Ewell on November 24, 1973, and two sons Darrick and Sidney were born into their union. Hortense Woods passed away on August 15, 2014, after 41 years of marriage. He later married Felicia Burrows on October 6, 2019; she survives. Larry also leaves behind a brother and a host of beloved grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Bethel United Methodist Church, with a visitation one-hour prior beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Tyson Parks, III, will officiate. Larry will be laid to rest at Swan Lake Memory Gardens, where US Army Military Rites will be rendered. Simons Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.
