Mr. Luther Funches Jr.

Mr. Luther Funches, Jr., 79, of Peoria, IL passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Luther was born on March 29, 1938 in Crystal Springs, MS to Luther, Sr., and Polly Lee (Hodge) Funches. Luther accepted Christ at an early age. He was educated in the Mississippi school system. Luther was an Air force veteran serving during the Korean Conflict where he received the National Defense Medal. After his tour of military duty, he married Ruth Mae Davis; she preceded him in death. Luther worked for Hiram Walker Distillery for years until they closed their Peoria location. He later worked until retirement with Door-to-Door, now known as City Lift. While not working, Luther enjoyed fishing and watching game shows; his favorite was Wheel of Fortune. He also loved, sports, cooking and spending time with his family. Luther leaves to cherish his most precious memories his loving and devoted family; four daughters, Sunday Davis, Patricia (Jeffrey) Funches-Smith and Mamie Funches, his caregiver, all of Peoria and Cornellia Davis of Springfield, IL; five sons, Johnie (Shermell) Davis, Sylvester Funches and Edward (Jorita) Funches all of Peoria, Richard Funches of Champaign, IL and Luther Funches, III of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Katherine “Kat” Thomas and Linda Funches both of Peoria; four brothers, Edward “Eddie” Funches, Jerry “Red” Funches, Albert “Uncle Bud” Funches and Phillip Funches, Sr., all of Peoria; 37 grandchildren; 70 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who all adored him. He is also preceded in death by his parents; one son, William Davis; two brothers, Courtland Funches, Sr., and Alford Funches, Sr., and a granddaughter, Alexis Westbrook. The family wishes to give a special thank you to the Staff at Illinois Cancer Center and OSF Hospice for their great care of their father. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, June 17, 2017 at New Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church with a visitation beginning at 1 pm. Host Pastor is Cleveland Thomas, Sr., and eulogist, Elder Frederick T. Morris of Abundant Life Church of Kansas City, KS.
