October 26, 1943 - July 13, 2020
Mr. Carl “Sonny” Harris, 76, of Peoria, Illinois, transitioned from this life Monday, July 13, 2020, at his home surrounded by family. Carl was born October 26, 1943, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Mary Faye (McClenton) Harris and Samuel Lomax, Sr. Carl was a veteran of the U.S. Army. After his military tour of duty, he worked for Caterpillar Tractor, Inc., retiring with 35 years of service. Later, Carl worked part-time for Securitas as a guard at Brown Business College, in downtown Peoria. Carl had a great sense of humor with unbelievable comedic timing. He loved debating about anything and everything, always taking the adversarial role. He loved his family, and was a “cool” uncle and loyal friend. Close family and friends will remember him as the biggest protector of his sisters, Joan and Jackie, and his only daughter, Monek. Carl was an avid horse racing fan, enjoyed casinos, and trying his luck at the lottery. Carl leaves to cherish his memory his children, Monek L. Harris of Tamarac, Florida; Carl L. Harris and Keith Harris, both of Minneapolis, Minnesota; siblings, Jacqueline (Cortez) Jackson-Harvey of Atlanta, Georgia, and Samuel Lomax, Jr., of Birmingham, Alabama; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; nieces: Candith (Michael) McMillan, of Boca Raton, Florida; Chelsea Jackson, of Fairburn, Georgia; Jean (Charles) McCall, of Montgomery, Alabama; JoeAnn Lomax, of San Diego California; nephews: Bryce (Regina) Jackson, of Alpharetta, Georgia; Jason Stewart, of Silvis, Illinois; and Clenton (Rakeemah) Stewart, of Atlanta, Georgia; aunts: Miriam (Raymond) Jackson, of Hartsville, Missouri; Judy (Larry) Hendricks, and Kathy Mitchell, of Peoria, Illinois; and Betty Savage, of St Anne, Illinois; and his most beloved cousins, Leroy (Ernestine) Vinson and Gladys Ivory, of Peoria, along with a host of other relatives and friends. Carl is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Joan Stewart and Mildred Lomax. The memorial services for Carl will be held at 1 pm, Friday, July 17, 2020, at Simons Mortuary with a visitation beginning at 12 noon, followed by the funeral at 1 pm, with Minister Judy Hendricks officiating. Burial will be at The Historic Springdale Cemetery, on Soldiers Hill, with full U.S. Army Military Rites accorded. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, social distancing and attendance limits will be observed. Simons Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at SimonsMortuary.com. As the States begin re-opening in response to the Global Coronavirus Pandemic, some people are returning to their previous normal living standards. Unfortunately, we are now in our new normal as unreal and sometimes uncomfortable as the socially distancing and continuous use of protective masks may feel. *In an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, we ask that everyone in attendance: wear a face mask and refrain from hugging, kissing and shaking hands (as hard as it is to see someone you care about and not touch them). Thanks in advance for your cooperation! *It is our responsibility as a Funeral Directors, to do everything we can to advise families in order to honor our beloved Families and to keep everyone as safe as possible. The chapel can socially distance and seat a limit of 50 or less people. All others will be able to flow through and view prior to beginning the Celebration of Life Ceremony.
