July 9, 1948 - April 23, 2022
Deacon Jerry Evans, 73, of Peoria, IL passed away at 12:32 pm on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at UnityPoint Health Methodist. Jerry was born on July 9, 1948 in Peoria, IL to James, Sr. and Johnnie Mae (Henderson) Evans. He was formerly married to Marilyn Robinson. Jerry was a 1969 Peoria Manual High School graduate where he excelled at playing football. He earned his Associates Degree in construction at Illinois Central College and afterwards played semi pro football for a while. Jerry worked in Supportive Services with the State of Illinois as a field coordinator where he was a catalyst in helping minorities find and secure union jobs. Jerry was a proud member of Local Union 649, retiring in 2014 after 43 years of service. Jerry was a member of the Masonic Lodge with whom he served for many years. He loved to travel, gardening and just work outside. In everything to Jerry…it was always a “Jerry’s thing”! He was the world’s counselor; he was the spiritual advisor; knowledgeable in all matters and very opinionated. His favorite saying was… “If I could, I’d like to make a suggestion”. He would always be there for his family and friends. Jerry was funny, goofy and had a great sense of humor. He would be playing but you probably didn’t know it because he looked so serious. Jerry loved listening to spiritual music and he read his Bible daily. He was a friend to everybody and he never met a stranger. Jerry was a true Christian and he took his faith very seriously. He was a faithful member of Pillar of Truth C.O.G.I.C., where he served as a trusted and well-respected Deacon until his health failed. Jerry leaves to cherish his most precious memories two sons, Idrissa Evans and Andre (Clarissa) Haywood; two close nieces, LaTanya “Tanny” Hodge and Juanita Hodge all of Peoria, IL and one other niece, Janet Evans of Tennessee; close nephew, Dennis Evans of Peoria, IL and three other nephews, Ronnie Evans of Bloomington, IL, Michael Evans of New York and Jason Evans of Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Mattie Hodge all of Peoria, IL; close best friend, Rev, Glen Evans of Rock Island, IL; 9 grandchildren; a host of greatgrandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James Evans, Jr., and Ernest Hodge; one sister, Geraldine Evans and one great nephew, Christopher Hodge, Jr. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Friday, May 6, 2022 at Pillar of Truth C.O.G.I.C. with a visitation beginning at 10 am.
