Former Peoria business owner Nathaniel Randle Jr. passed away October 6, 2021 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. The 87-year-old Randle was owner of N &R Supreme Beauty Salon & Supply House currently located at 609 S. Western Avenue in Peoria. Nathaniel was born September 10,1934 in Cruger, Mississippi to Nathaniel, Sr., and Lizzie Reedy-Randle. He moved to Greenwood, MS and attended Meeks School. On March 16, 1957, he married Rosa “Rosie” Lee Anderson in Peoria, IL. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. “Nate” as he was so fondly called loved laughing and talking with people. He was always fixing things around the house and enjoyed working in the yard. Nate, Rosie and the family were avid bowlers and were members of several bowling leagues. After moving to Peoria Nathaniel worked at several companies, including the Jefferson Hotel, Armour Packing House, Sealtest Dairy and Kroger Grocery Store from where he retired in 2015. What started as a beauty salon in the basement of their Butler Street home grew into a business empire with products in Decatur, Springfield, Galesburg, Champaign, Bloomington-Normal and Danville. The late Rosie Randle was the visionary behind the team. The couple moved the beauty salon from their home and expanded it. Their new location was just a few blocks away at 623 S. MacArthur where they added a large beauty supply store, salon and brought in a team of licensed cosmetologists. N&R Supreme Beauty Supply were major distributors to salons and stores throughout Central Illinois. Their two children, Gail and Ronnie and other relatives worked at the company and helped it become the first and largest black owned beauty supply business in Peoria. It lasted 52 years. When asked about the secret to his success Nate often attributed it to having a dream, passion and discipline. He was a big supporter of the NAACP and a member of the Masonic Hall. Nathaniel Randle, the oldest of 10 siblings, grew up in a family of entrepreneurs. His brothers L.A. and Frank both owned successful businesses. Another brother Robert Randle, pastored a church and owned Peoria Palace Skating Rink. Charles Randle founded Illinois Business Financial Services, a government lending group for small businesses. On September 18, 2021, the Black Business Alliance awarded Nathaniel Randle the Business Pioneer Award. The award was given in appreciation of his contribution to the economic empowerment of the African American Community. Nathaniel leaves to cherish his loving memory, his daughter Gail Randle of Peoria, IL; his son Ronnie Randle of Richmond, Texas; brother, Charles (Mary Ann) Randle; sisters; Nancy Murdock and Leola Randle-Jefferson all of Peoria; six grandchildren eight great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; host of nieces, nephews, cousins, a special friend, Kevin Lee, other friends and his Mt. Zion Baptist Church Family all who adored. He was preceded in death by his wife Rosie, four brothers, Frank “Sonny”, Rev. Robert “RW”, Jimmie Lee “Bo Peep”, and LA, two sisters, Ruth “Doll” Sargent and Lizzie “Tet” Lobdell. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 15, 2021, at Mt. Zion M.B. Church. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 2021, at Mt. Zion M.B. Church, with a visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Elder Mae Catherine Godhigh will officiate. Nathaniel will be laid to rest at Historic Springdale Cemetery. Simons Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at simonsmortuary.com.
