Ms. Ruth Washington, 84, of Peoria, Illinois, passed away at 12:32 am on Saturday, January 1, 2022 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. Ruth was born in Columbus, Mississippi on May 24, 1937 to Edward and Eddie (Reed) Johnson. She was raised by Andrew and Addie Washington. Ruth worked at Bradley University as a cook at a sorority house for many years. She also was a seamstress. She loved cooking, crocheting and fishing. Ruth was a beautiful person with a smile that would light up a room. She said things just as she saw them, “like it TIS”. Ruth loved everyone and was a wonderful grandmother and great grandmother. She was a faithful member of Star of Hope Full Gospel Church where she served in the Senior Choir. Ruth leaves to cherish her most precious memories two sons, Andrew Ruben Washington, Sr. and Grant Crawford; four daughters, Regina Washington, Samella Shumate, Cassandra (Tommie) Shaffer and Cynthia Smith; four brothers, Billy (Betty) Johnson, Ralph Johnson, Alvin “Chuckie” Johnson and Carl Johnson all of Peoria, IL; five sisters, Shirley Farmer of Pulaski, IL, Jennette Hicks, Judy Thomas, Racine Johnson and Carolyn Washington all of Peoria, IL; a special niece, Lavonda Johnson; two special friends, Vera Cornish and Sally Deloney all of Peoria, IL; twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; the parents who raised her; two sons, Raymond Washington and Melvin Young and a great-granddaughter, Rei’Yelle Grayson. Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Star of Hope Full Gospel Church with a visitation prior beginning at 9 am. Bishop Joseph Johnson will officiate. Ruth will be laid to rest at Lutheran Cemetery. Simons Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at SimonsMortuary.com.
